What to Wear to Hot Yoga? Shorts or Leggings, Decided by the Heat

Updated October 2, 2026 by FIERCEPULSE

Wear fitted, lightweight pieces: high-waisted yoga leggings, capris or yoga shorts, a sports bra or close-fitting tank, and nothing made of cotton. Then go shorter as the room gets hotter and the class gets longer. A Bikram-style room runs at about 105°F with 40% humidity, according to Mayo Clinic. Shorts or capris carry the least wet fabric there. In a heated flow class full of arm balances and binds, full-length leggings usually win, because fabric on the leg gives your arms something to hold.

Hot yoga is yoga practiced in a heated room, which Cleveland Clinic puts at 90 to 105°F for most classes. That is the short answer on what to wear. The rest of this guide turns it into a decision you can make from the studio's class description. It also covers the details first-timers find out the hard way: where sweat shows, what to put on top, and what to leave in the car.

At a glance: your hot yoga bag

  • ✓ Bottoms: high-waisted leggings, capris or yoga shorts, chosen by room heat (table below)
  • ✓ Top: a sports bra, or a fitted tank over one
  • ✓ Two towels: a full-length one for the mat and a small one for your face and hands
  • ✓ Water, a hair tie, and a dry change of clothes for the drive home
  • ✗ Leave behind: shoes, regular socks, body lotion, jewelry and anything cotton

Is it better to wear shorts or leggings to hot yoga?

Leggings are better when the class asks you to grip your own legs. Shorts are better when the class is mostly about coping with the heat.

Our rule for telling the two apart is the grip test. In any pose where a hand or arm holds a leg, skin on wet skin slips, and fabric between them grips. Crow puts your knees on the backs of your upper arms, eagle wraps one leg around the other, and a bind has your hand holding your own thigh or ankle. You can test this yourself: mid-class, hold your own calf once on bare skin and once through fabric. If your class is full of these poses, wear full-length yoga leggings.

Shorts make sense when the sequence is set, the postures are mostly standing and floor work, and the heat is the main challenge. A Bikram-style class is one example. A soaked pair of full-length leggings is a lot of wet fabric to sit in for 90 minutes, and yoga shorts leave less of it. Capris are the middle ground: the fabric covers the thigh and knee, where your arms grip, and stops below it.

Hot yoga is its own case. For running, cycling and lifting the trade-off runs differently, which we cover in leggings vs shorts for everyday workouts.

How hot is a hot yoga class, and what should you wear at each temperature?

Match length to the posted room temperature: full length when no temperature is posted or the class has arm balances, capris at 90 to 100°F, shorts at about 105°F. If it is your first class, capris are the safe pick at any temperature.

The temperatures behind that rule come from two clinics. Cleveland Clinic puts most hot yoga classes between 90 and 105°F, against 68 to 72°F for a normal room. Bikram yoga is a hot yoga format that Mayo Clinic describes as a 90-minute series of standing and stretching postures, in a room heated to about 105°F (40°C) with 40% humidity.

Studios post the temperature in the class description, so you can decide before you pack. Here is how we would dress for each.

What the studio says Bottoms Top Why
"Warm" or "heated" flow, no temperature posted Full-length yoga leggings Sports bra or fitted tank Lots of transitions and arm balances. Grip matters more than heat.
90 to 100°F, flow or power class Leggings or capris Sports bra Capris keep fabric where your arms grip and drop the wet weight below the knee.
About 105°F with humidity, 90 minutes (Bikram-style) Yoga shorts or capris Sports bra A fixed sequence of standing and floor postures with no arm balances. Heat is the main problem, so carry less fabric.
Your first class, any temperature Capris Sports bra under a fitted tank The safe middle. You find out how much you sweat before you commit to a length.

What hot yoga customers tell us

These are published reviews from FIERCEPULSE customers who practice hot yoga, quoted as they wrote them, and they describe their own classes, not a lab test.

"I do Bikram's Hot Yoga everyday, 90 minutes in 55% humidity, 105 degrees heat." Sandra R.
"I wear them in the hot yoga room, they're soft, stretchy, hold their shape and the colors don't fade or bleed." Kim L.
"As a hot yogi I always struggle for comfort and these fit the bill. The material gives great coverage without being heavy." Kisch

Note Sandra's room: 55% humidity, against the 40% Mayo Clinic describes for Bikram. Rooms vary, so read your own studio's posted conditions before you choose a length.

Where does sweat show on printed leggings?

Where sweat shows on a print depends on what color sits on four zones: the waistband, the seat, the backs of the knees and the inner thighs. Those are the zones we check when we judge a print for a hot room, so the useful question is what color sits on them, not whether the pair is printed or solid.

You can run the same check from the product photos before you buy. Look at the front and back views and find the top of the waistband, the seat, behind the knee and the inner thigh. A print can be dark overall and still have a pale patch on one of them, for example a white waistband or a light panel across the seat. If all four land on a dark or busy part of the design, the print gives a wet patch less contrast to show against.

Our Optical Illusion set is a worked example. The design runs solid black down the center of the leg and moves its white dot gradient out to the side seams, so the pale part of the print sits away from the inner thigh. It comes in three lengths, which makes it easy to match one look to every row of the table above.

How the print got onto the fabric is worth knowing too. Dye-sublimation is a printing method in which ink is turned to gas with heat and bonded into polyester fibers. Every FIERCEPULSE piece is printed this way. The ink ends up inside the fiber, so there is no printed layer sitting on the surface of the fabric. Each piece is also printed edge to edge and made to order.

What should you wear on top for hot yoga?

Wear a sports bra on its own, or a fitted tank over one if you want more coverage. The one thing to avoid is a loose T-shirt, because in downward dog and every forward fold it slides down over your face, and once it is wet it stays there.

If you want a matching set, the Optical Illusion Sports Bra carries the same print as the bottoms above. It runs XS to 2XL at $64.99. Note that the bra's size range is wider than the bottoms', which run XS to XL. FIERCEPULSE plus size is a separate 2XL to 6XL line with its own prints.

Should you take a tank off mid-class? Check your studio's dress code first. If you are unsure, wear the tank over the bra so you have the option.

What to look for in any hot yoga legging

These checks apply to any brand, ours included, so run them before the pair goes into a 100°F room.

  1. A high, wide waistband. If you find yourself pulling it up in the shop mirror, you will be pulling it up all class. The waistband is also the clearest difference between the two types, which we explain in yoga leggings vs regular leggings.
  2. A synthetic knit, not cotton. Cotton soaks up sweat and hangs heavy.
  3. A snug, high-rise fit that does not slide when wet. Try a deep lunge in the fitting room and check that the waistband stays where it started.
  4. Coverage you have checked yourself. Do a deep forward fold in front of a mirror, in good light, before your first class. Do not rely on a label.
  5. Dark or busy color on the four sweat zones. Waistband, seat, behind the knee, inner thigh, as above.

If a pair passes all five, it is ready for the hot room.

Towels, grip and what else to bring

Hot yoga is done barefoot, and a towel over your mat matters as much as anything you wear. Sweat pools on a bare mat and turns every standing pose into a slide. A full-length mat towel soaks it up and gives your hands and feet a surface to hold. A second, small towel for your face saves you from wiping sweat with your hands mid-pose.

Bring water and use it: Mayo Clinic advises drinking plenty of water before, during and after a hot class, and stopping if you feel dizzy, lightheaded or sick. It also advises checking with your doctor first if you have any health concerns or are pregnant.

The heat is the reason: in a study commissioned by the American Council on Exercise (April 2015), many participants reached a core temperature above 103°F during a 90-minute Bikram class. The same report notes that sports medicine guidelines put the risk of heat illness at a core temperature of 104°F.

Pack a dry change of clothes too, because leaving a heated room in a soaked outfit and sitting in a cold car is the part of hot yoga nobody warns you about.

What not to wear to hot yoga

  • Cotton anything. It gets heavy and stays wet.
  • Loose shorts or wide-leg pants. They ride up in shoulder stand and gape in seated folds.
  • Light solid colors. There is no print to break up a wet patch on any of the four zones. If you love a pale print, pick one whose pale areas avoid the seat and inner thigh.
  • Body lotion or oil. It makes your skin, and your grip, slippery before you have even started sweating.
  • Jewelry and regular socks. Rings and bracelets get in the way of binds, such as a hand clasped around the opposite ankle. Socks slide on a mat unless your studio allows grip socks.

After class, wash your kit soon rather than leaving it balled up in a gym bag. Our guide on how to care for leggings covers the wash settings that keep a print looking new.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to my first hot yoga class?

Wear capris or full-length yoga leggings with a sports bra and a fitted tank you can take off. Capris are the safest first choice, because you do not yet know how much you sweat or how the room feels. Bring a mat towel, a hand towel, water and a dry change of clothes.

Are you barefoot during hot yoga?

Yes. Hot yoga is practiced barefoot, like most yoga. Regular socks slide on the mat. Some studios allow grip socks with rubber dots on the sole, so check with yours if you prefer to cover your feet.

Can I take my shirt off during hot yoga?

That depends on your studio's dress code, so check it before class. If you are not sure, wear a fitted tank over a sports bra. Then you can take the tank off once the room heats up, if the studio allows it.

What are the best leggings for hot yoga?

Look for a high, wide waistband and a snug fit that does not slide in a deep lunge. Choose a synthetic knit rather than cotton, with dark or busy color on the waistband, seat, backs of the knees and inner thighs. Pick full length for heated flow classes with arm balances, capris for 90 to 100°F rooms, and shorts for a 105°F Bikram-style room.
